Washington DC

After a lovely couple of days in Phili, our next stop was Washington DC. A three hour bus journey didn’t sound too bad but we had a little scupple with some other cars on the highway which delayed us an hour or so. Luckily noone was hurt 😊

The bus dropped us off at Union Station, a really luxurious train station by our standards. A short uber to the hotel gave us our first glimpse of DC and after check in, we’d made a reservation at a holocaust exhibition a 20 min walk away.

The exhibition was free (which is rare in the states) and was super informative and interesting. I would have loved to have spent more time here as have always taken interest in this period of history but it was full of people making it difficult to read a lot of the information.

James was getting a lot of attention for his ‘Ice Cream Appreciation Society’ t-shirt so we decided to make use of one of the many ice cream trucks near the national mall and got the boy and ice cream – an absolute rip off at $10 per ice cream. Even worse that James morphed into a 2 year old, unable to stop his ten dollar icecream melting all over his hands and almost threw a wobbly.

After a little wander round and a dip in the hotel pool, we freshened up and headed back to the mall at night to see the various monuments. It houses the Capitol, the White House, Lincoln memorial and the Washington Monument (which James delighted over the fact he could make various phallic puns).

We decided to wake our legs up with a jog around the mall the next morning and absolutely baked in the heat but it was great to take in the sites without all the tourists early on a Sunday!

We’d booked a slot at the Smithsonian museum, which is very similar to the Natural History museum but again…super busy and full of kids…what did we expect on labor day weekend in the capital!!

Burritos in the wharf was a well deserved treat and after a little nosy around the fancy yachts, we hired scooters to get us round, which left me delighted in the fact that I could go faster than James Haha!

Overall we enjoyed Washington, a very clean city and if you’re into museums, it’s the place to go!
